SELF ASSESSMENT

THE ORGANIZATION’S CURRENT NEEDS AND GOALS

Every phase, including Exploration, begins with a self-assessment, an exploration of what you have and what you need. In the Exploration phase, the focus of the Self-Assessment is on articulating your space needs as they relate to your current workspace. Be honest and open. This is the time to lay your cards on the table, try to punch holes in your assumptions, and identify existing and potential issues and opportunities. It is the first step in addressing the Exploration phase’s central task of identifying assets and priorities.

OBJECTIVE FOR THE EXPLORATION PHASE:

Identify the discrepancies between current and desired conditions. At this point, it’s not about how you will make changes, it’s about what is needed. The things you discover, identify, and articulate during this assessment will influence how you communicate planned changes, make a case for funding, and evaluate progress in later phases.

KEY QUESTIONS FOR EXPLORATION:

Does your current space situation fit your organization’s needs?

TO DO:

Complete a Space Needs Assessment by discussing these questions about your current space:

  • Does your space detract or enhance your ability to deliver programs?

  • Does the cost of space (i.e. rent) positively or negatively impact your financial health?

  • Are your rights to occupy space secured by a long-term agreement or threatened to change?

  • Do the capital needs of your space pose a financial risk?

  • Does your location help connect your organization with the larger community?
