LEADERSHIP

THE INDIVIDUALS RESPONSIBLE FOR MAKING DECISIONS ABOUT THE SPACE

Leadership is crucial during periods of significant change. Staff is often challenged to take on new roles, bring on additional help, and navigate uncharted waters. Boards often take on more prominent roles in strategy, fundraising, and advocacy. Take the time necessary to consider the people responsible for moving your space-related initiative forward. Ultimately its success may be determined by this group’s leadership and decisions.

OBJECTIVE FOR THE EXPLORATION PHASE:

Identify the Leadership Team of decision-makers. This internal planning team should understand and agree on the general direction the planning process should take – or at least be willing to discuss it until consensus is reached. The Leadership Team will lead the initiative from start to finish, so talk through the roles and responsibilities.

KEY QUESTION FOR EXPLORATION:

Is your Leadership Team assembled and in alignment?

TO DO:

Identify the Leadership Team of individuals who will be making decisions on the space. This small team includes executive staff and board leadership. It can also include board members with relevant experience and staff from key departments (e.g. facilities or fundraising).

Gather the Leadership Team to:

  • Discuss the fundamentals of the space-related initiative

  • Establish expectations of the working group, such as staying involved throughout a multi-year process, meeting regularly, and roles and responsibilities.

  • Review this handbook and schedule a time to start working through each element.
